    Description

Unique Hand Painted KPM Berlin Mocha Cup And Saucer from 19th century with raised gold.
This is an extraordinary and unique mocha cup and saucer set from the KPM Royal Porcelain Manufactory (read more about the KPM manufactory below). Both the cup and the saucer are an incredible piece of art in their own right.
The cup depicts a seated Eros, the Ancient Greek God of Love (also known as Cupid). He is depicted sitting on a cloud, with his infamous bow and arrows, which he shoots at people in order to make them fall in love, in hand. The detail of the Eros painting is absolutely masterful! Such care has been put by the artist in meticulously painting each and every hair strand on his head, each and every little feather on his wings; the anatomy of his body is perfect: childish, and yet so elegant, as he is a God. But most beautifully the artist painted Eros’ face. It is so fair and so sweet, and also has a little bit of that mischievousness which Eros is so known for in the Greek myths.
The saucer is an equal treasure of artwork. It features images of doves perched upon a cloud with an open book and laurel branches above them. How beautifully the artist painted the doves! How light and airy the cloud on which they sit, it seems to transport us to the gates of Olympus, the Ancient Greek home of the Gods, where Eros would dwell.
Both the cup as well as the saucer feature “raised gold”, a specialty of the KPM porcelain manufactory. It lends the set a very royal feeling, as well as raising significantly its’ value as it takes more gold to create this look, than is normally used in other porcelain sets.
CONDITION : PLEASE IGNORE THE GLARE.

The Royal Porcelain Factory in Berlin (German: Königliche Porzellan-Manufaktur Berlin, abbreviated as KPM), also known as the Royal Porcelain Manufactory Berlin and whose products are generally called Berlin porcelain, was founded in 1763 by King Frederick II of Prussia (known as Frederick the Great). Its actual origins, however, lie in three private enterprises which, under crown patronage, were trying to establish the production of "white gold" (i.e. porcelain) in Berlin from the mid-18th century onwards.
